How can I compare online ESL companies by pay?

You might be wondering, “What ESL company pays the most?” To find out which ESL company pays just search by clicking the header and sorting the chart by pay. I listed base pay and also top pay. Usually, ESL companies pay a range depending on your rating, your background, the number of students in your class, whether you teach during peak hours, or by the season, etc.

ESLTeacher360 also has a pretty comprehensive list of ESL companies that you can look through.

Some of the highest pay in ESL seems to be listed by peoplle on platforms. When you wwork on a platform, you rae trading consistency and ease for higher pay. An ESL platform is like an ESL Craigslist or online marketplalce for online English teachers. You post your bio and summary and attract students on your own. Some teaachers have great success with these platforms. Usually, teachers who aare photogenic and stereotypicallly “Western looking” seem to do better on these plltaforms, due bias in the ESL industry, unfortunately.

If you are interested, some platforms include:

ESL Platforms

Preply – One of the most popular platforms, Preply lets you post your bio and attract adult students from around the world. It is hard to command high rates if you are not a native English speaking, but some teachers build a thriving, high-paying student base on Preply over time.

iTalki – Another very popular platform, iTalki will have you teaching adults and kids. Like Preply, you set your own rates and build your own student base. Their students come from around the world.

Allschool – To post your bio on Allschool you need a passport from a native English speaking country. Allschool is based in Singapore and you will be teaching adults and need to make your own lesson material.

Outschool– They aren’t specific to ESL and they cater towards American children. You have to be based in the US to post your class on Outschool.

Learned.Live– You teach adults and the platform is based in the UK.

You can compare ESL companies using many metrics.

Degree Requirements

There are many ESL companies that do not require a degree. Many companies will hire you to teach English online with no experience besides knowing English!

Conversely, some companies require decades of experience, professional training, and higher education. It just depends on what platform or company you apply to.

Some ESL jobs require you to have a degree and other ESL companies do not require a degree.

Pay Range

Teaching online is often seen as a side gig. And, indeed, it can be a great side hustle. However, you can also earn a full-time livable wage teaching English online. There are many companies that pay over $20/hour.

Note that each company has a range of pay so the graph above shows base pay to top pay.

Tech Requirements

Some companies require laptops and others let you teach from your iPad or even your phone. You might be looking for an audio-only job, or you might not be able to get an ethernet cabled Internet connection at your location. These are all very specific requirements and this chart will help you find a company that can work with you.

Native Speaker Requirement

If you are a non-native English speaker who wants to teach English online, then search through this category to find employers who want to hire you. Are you unsure of whether you would be considered a native speaker by companies? It isn’t as clear as you would assume- and even problematic. Be sure you are aware of what metrics companies use to qualify an applicant as a native speaker or not.

Pay

Note that each company has a range of pay. In the ESL industry, we often refer to the “base pay” per class. Often, you teach two classes per hour. So, I multiplied the base pay per class by two to reach the hourly pay if the company requires two classes an hour.

Online English Companies are always changing their pay and requirements depending on the ebbs and flows of the industry, so be sure to add a comment below if you see any information that is incorrect.
