Teaching for VIPKID Global: I got fired

My first year teaching for VIPKid, I got fired for too many absences. But, I loved VIPkid so much that I reapplied and they hired me again. That experience taught me a lot. I learned to create system redundancies to make sure I don’t have class cancelations. For example, I have a second laptop, emergency hotspot wifi, charged battery and lamp in case of a power outage, etc.

I got fired from VIPKid. What should I do?

Well, fix the reason you got fired so it doesn’t happen again. Then, wait 6 months. Create a new email. Apply again.

Learn your lesson and be a thousand times better this time! Don’t give up. You can do this. Here are my real experiences getting fired and rehired at VIPKid so you don’t feel so alone.

Don’t Get Fired Again: Top Tips to Avoid VIPKid Cancellations

The most common reason VIPKID fires you, is you went over their cancellation policy. VIPKID has a 6-cancellation limit. That means if the company doesn’t grant you “soft” or “medium” cancellations, and you tally up to 6 total, they reserve the right to fire you.

Note that VIPKid counts 3 cancellations in one BJT as 2, and less than 3 cancellations count as one. So, if you cancel classes in a row, you might be in luck.

*You can try pleading your case and in some situations, if you have a stellar rating and Dino has blessed you, they may allow you to continue your contract if you are very close to the contract’s end. So, do consider writing a ticket if you have hit 6 cancellations and your contract is under review.

How to Have VIPKid BackUps

Here are some emergencies that happened to me during my first year of online teaching that caused me absences, and what you should do to avert them:

Have a backup Laptop/Ipad

I had a home break-in in Romania and the thief stole my laptop, which I didn’t see until the moment I woke up right before my first class of the day. I canceled the classes for the entire day because I had to go buy a new laptop. Don’t let this happen to you. Always have a backup device. Maybe your laptop suddenly stops working or maybe someone steals it; who knows. Your laptop is so crucial to this job that it is inexcusable to not have a backup device. If you can’t afford a second laptop, get an iPad. You can teach for VIPKid from your iPad.

If you can’t afford any of these then at least talk to a neighbor or friend ahead of time and explain that, in the case of an extreme emergency, you may have to come over and use their computer for the day. I ended up using my neighbor’s computer because the electronic stores in town were closed and I couldn’t even get a laptop the same day! Awful!

Have a same-day doctor on call who can write notes

I got bronchitis and lost my voice for over a week. I had a doctor’s note for most of those days but it did not cover the initial day as the doctor could not schedule the same day visit

Have a battery bank

I had an electrical outage one day. Be sure to have an external battery for your laptop and a battery-run lamp in case you need to hotspot from your phone and keep your laptop charged during a power outage.

Have an emergency contact for family emergencies

My grandmother fell and had to go to the hospital and I was the only one who could pick her up that day after her emergency visit. Consider having a person on call, who you ask ahead of time to cover for you in case your family member has an emergency.

Life happens. Keep a plan B in your pocket at all times. VIPKid has a strict cancellation policy- even if you cancel before the class begins, it counts against you. Too many cancellations and they will absolutely fire you.
